I started making these in 2020 for Christmas not Halloween. The bright colors and whimsical monsters were a hit with my family. Everyone helped decorate. The following year, I made them for Halloween. This is going to be our new tradition. They are fun and easy to make. Your children can help you with this, and there is no really easy way of going wrong.
Baking and Icing
Start with your favorite cupcake recipe. I use the Red Velvet Cupcake Recipe from Divas Can Cook Website. Click Here for Recipe. This is one moist cupcake. I also like the Vanilla Cupcake Recipe from Food Network. Click Here for Recipe. You can add different food coloring to add extra flair to the monster cupcakes when you use the vanilla cake option.
Step two: Make the icing. I would make a lot of icing. It all depends on how many cupcakes you have any how many different colors you want. For the icing, I use cream cheese icing from a recipe from Gingerbread Bar Recipe from Cooking Classy. Click Here for Recipe. You will have to add more powdered sugar to this recipe to be able to pipe it. I start with 2 batches of the icing.
After you color the icing and place them in piping bags you are ready to decorate. I would also limit the colors: orange, purple, white and green. This year I am going to try black. I have a great Wilton gel color that worked very well on some cookies. I also use gel coloring. You do not have to use a lot and the colors come out vivid. The colors get darker with time.
Decorating
For decorating you will need candy of multiple colors and shapes. You will also need Oreo cookies, edible eyes of various sizes and edible markers.
My favorite monster cupcakes are the mummy cupcakes. They simple but adorable. You will need basket weave tip for this. Basically, you go straight across the cupcake with this tip. You repeat until done. I then add the eyes and end with a strip of frosting over the eyes. You can add half an oreo cookie with or without icing for the mouth.
For the other monsters you can also use the grass tip. These will make your cupcakes look like sesame street monster. As stated above, I use half an Oreo for the mouth, but really you can do mouth with icing as well.
I also use edible markers to draw in special effects. I use the red marker to draw in tongues on the Oreo icing. I also use it to make blood shot eyes. They do have blood shot eyes, but with the marker you don’t have to buy them. You can also use the black ones to modify the eyes expressions and other colors to add different color eyes.
There are no limits to what you can use and do. Dehydrated marshmallows can be horns. I have used tear drop hard candy.
Look for inspiration from your kid’s favorite shows. Sully and Mike make great cupcakes. So do the characters on sesame streets.
Let this be your new tradition.
