Itty-Bitty Kitty Corn By Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham

I have to admit I judged this book too quickly.  My daughter picked this book at her school book fair, and I reluctantly agreed to get it for her. Yes, I tried to convince her against it, and I am glad she won that battle of wills. What snobbery! Don’t ever judge a book by its cover.

This is a sweet tale about a kitty who believes she is a unicorn. She remains strong in her sense of identity, despite the constant putdowns by the other animals.  Then she is confronted by a real unicorn, and her dream shatters. The reality of the other unicorn makes her feel so small. She is about to give up on her dream until the unicorn confesses that he believes he is a “kitty” corn. It turns out they are both kitty corns.

Alana likes this book because it has a happy ending—friendship, a natural occurring phenomena when two unique creatures discover common ground and are accepted for who they truly are.  It is a feel-good book and puts a smile on both of our faces.
