DK First Animal Encyclopedia and Smithsonian: The Animal Book (A Visual Encyclopedia)

DK First Animal Encyclopedia

and

Smithsonian: The Animal Book; A visual encyclopedia of life on Earth

The kids I have been around have a natural curiosity for animals and these books do not disappoint. They both have pages and pages of colorful photos of all types of animals from the strange, the funny, and the fearsome, to the colorful.  They both have fun facts about the animals.  I prefer books like these with talking points.

You can learn about how the animal world parents. Scorpions carry their babies on their back until they can look after themselves and one type of fish carries the eggs in his mouth until they hatch. Baby elephants play chase and hippos can hold their breath for 5 minutes. There are butterflies that like to feast on alligator tears. These books have pictures of animals from all different angles.

The Smithsonian book has a scale on the pages so you can compare the size of the animals to your hand or a small boy.  Both books are great. For me these are two books to buy and not borrow.
