Grumpy Monkey

Book Cover for Grumpy Monkey

By Suzanne Lang, Illustrated by Max Lang

This was another book that was gifted to us by an Aunt. It is about Jim Panzee who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed. Although the sun is shining and the sky is blue, he just does not feel right. His friend Norman, the gorilla, and the other animals in the jungle make all sorts of suggestions on how to improve his mood: “Eat old meat,” like the marabou or take a bath like the hippo. He rejects them all and realizes that maybe he just needs to take the time to feel grumpy to which his friend replies, “it is a wonderful day to feel grumpy.”

I like the book because it constructively deals with emotions that, from a child’s perspective, are real —justified or not.  Sometimes you just don’t feel so great. It is okay. My daughter loves Norman in the book – Jim’s happy friend and the silliness surrounding his attempts to cheer his friend up. This book is heartwarming.
